Salt Cay

Salt Cay is the second largest of the Turks Islands comprising Turks and Caicos Islands. Its size is a little over 2.5 square miles. The population of under 100 people all live in the capital Balfour Town on the west coast. It was once home to several hundred people, all supported by the salt industry.

Bermudians came to the islands in the 1673 century fleeing slavery and established what was to become the principal industry for the next 300 years - the production of salt from brine.

Ruins from the salt operations remain on Salt Cay, and it is popular with tourists looking for solitude, whale-watching and scuba diving.

I paid a visit to the tiny island in October and took a few photos to share.
